linocut print influenced by Vermeer’s use of light, subject matter, and composition.
i’m inspired by Vermeer’s fascination with domesticity and the mundane everyday occurrences that are overlooked. he paints these moments as if they were precious gems, exquisite, magical, and almost unearthly beautiful. his paintings are ambiguous, but usually suggest a romantic theme. i made my print with the same intention.
it depicts a domestic interior, a woman emerging from behind a curtain, another figure’s feet and shoulder barely visible behind the curtain might go unseen altogether, and the table and chair at the right forefront are cropped and abstracted in their awkward and abrupt intrusion, placing the viewer at a distance as if peering through a window watching the intimate scene.
what all of that means, if anything at all, depends on the viewer of course.
it’s interesting how the different colors give the image such a different personality, my favorite is definitely the blue. the blue ink was thicker which made the print heavier and abstract, it feels dark and brooding. like winter.
